A memorandum of understanding (MoU), under which Vietnam's Ministry of Finance and the US Department of Energy will cooperate to prevent the illegal transport of nuclear materials and other radioactive substances, was signed in Hanoi on July 2, Thai News Service reported.
Under the MoU, the US Department of Energy will provide, install, maintain and train Vietnamese staff in how to operate container scanners which can detect radioactive and nuclear materials in containers in ports.
Micheal Michalak, US Ambassador to Vietnam, said that the bilateral cooperation will help to facilitate ensuring the security of international commercial maritime transport.
The scanners will be installed at Cai Mep-Thi Vai port in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
