ONE denies new container ship grounded off Brazil

Japan’s Ocean Network Express (ONE) has denied a brand new boxship grounded off Itajai in Brazil on only its second visit.

The 11,800-teu ONE Amazon (built 2022) was delivered from China’s Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding in September.

The ND website had earlier reported the 330-metre vessel got stuck on a sandbar in the access channel at low tide on Monday.

ONE later told TradeWinds that, according to the vessel’s master and local authorities, the ship did not run aground.

“Vessel has been inspected by local authorities and cleared with no indications of grounding. She is now on her way to next port Santos,” the company said.

A video posted to social media shows the vessel high and mostly dry in the channel.

The eye-witness filming the incident said: “Look where the ship is, it’s aground.”

Tugboats can be seen at the site.

The ONE Amazon made its inaugural call there two weeks ago, handling 944 containers.

Underway again

AIS data showed it underway again on Tuesday, en route to Santos in Brazil.

The ship has protection and indemnity (P&I) cover by Gard in Norway.

ONE is jointly owned by Japanese shipping giant NYK, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and K Line.

VesselsValue assesses the ship to be worth $111m.

Its value has seen a steep revision in weaker boxship markets.

A week ago, it was worth $174m.

The ONE Amazon is chartered to ONE for two years.
