SM Line Containership Could Be Docked at Canadian Cruise Terminal For ‘Weeks’ After Breakdown

A South Korean containership could be docked at the cruise terminal in Victoria, British Columbia for “several weeks” after breaking down off the west coast of Canada last month.

The 304-meter-long SM Busan arrived at the Victoria Cruise Terminal in Ogden Point on January 2 for emergency repairs after departing Portland, Oregon for Busan, Korea before Christmas.

The ship experienced an engine breakdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Moresby Island on December 24, and the vessel was able to make way at reduced power towards Victoria under escort of a tug, according to marine claims consultancy WK Webster.

It is not yet clear when the voyage will resume and it’s possible that General Average will be declared by the shipowner, the company said.

A spokesperson for the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority said SM Busan’s crew remains on board the vessel and have been working with local organizations to remove the ship’s fuel before repairs to the vessel are made. The organization wrote on Twitter that the ship could be docked there for “several weeks”

The ship’s presence at the Victoria Cruise Terminal, Canada’s busiest cruise port, is turning the heads of residents in town. It’s the first time a cargo ship has tied up at the terminal and also first ship to utilize the new Pier B mooring dolphin extension completed in early 2020 for cruise ships.

SM Busan is operated by Seoul-based SM Line on its Pacific Northwest Service (PNS), connecting Ningbo, Shanghai, and Busan with Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland.

The ship was built in 2007 and has a capacity of 6,655 TEU. Some reporting indicates the ship may have encountered problems with its fuel, causing the breakdown.
