The head of Hamburg Süd, Poul Hestbaek, has called time on his tenure at the Maersk company.

A longtime Hamburg Süd executive announced via social media that he would be leaving Maersk by August 31.

Maersk bought Hamburg Süd from the Oetker family for $4.4bn in 2017 and has gradually integrated the line into the Danish carrier’s global operations.

In January this year, Maersk announced it was moving towards a single, unified brand that will see shipping lines including the 152-year-old Hamburg Süd discontinued and integrated into Maersk.

Hestbaek joined Hamburg Süd in 2004 and was promoted to the chief executive position in 2021.

“My responsibility for overseeing the successful completion of the Hamburg Süd brand integration into Maersk is reaching its conclusion,” Hestbaek said on LinkedIn.

“While my path may be leading me in a new direction, the connections, and lessons I have learned will remain with me. I look forward to staying in touch and witnessing the continued success and growth of Maersk,” he added.

Earlier this year, Philip Oetker, the last family member linked to the previous ownership, left the famous German shipping line after a 16-year career.
